Harpoon Brewery’s newest year-round offering is a full-flavored version of its lighter, sessionable cousin Harpoon Rec. There’s a new definition of “making it to the big leagues” – one that involves big hops, big ABV and big additions of better-for-you ingredients: Harpoon Big League IPA. Harpoon sent me two 16-ounce cans of Big League to sample. Since the calorie count isn’t listed in the press release (below), I asked about that and found out that it’s 230 calories per 12-ounce serving, right in line with other IPAs. So it’s interesting to see Harpoon’s latest “League” series beer-Big League IPA, a full-sized beer at 7.2% ABV. The key feature of these beers, of course, being low alcohol, and thus low calorie, while still aiming to maintain a flavorful beer drinking experience. Last fall I reviewed the Fantasy League mix-pack of low-alcohol, “better-for-you” lifestyle beers from Harpoon Brewery, four beers with a maximum of 4% ABV and brewed with ostensibly healthy ingredients, buckwheat kasha, chia, and sea salt.
